LECTURE NOTES

Week 1 :
For our first lecture, we were brief about the module by Ms Jinchi. We were tasked to choose a research theme and also choose a topic which we were interested in to conduct our research on.

Week 2 :
For this lecture, Ms Jinchi taught us on how to write our problem statement, research question, and research objective for our research paper. Then we were separated into 2 groups one group under Dr. Hayati and the other group was under Ms. Jinchi. I was placed in Ms Jinchi's group.

Week 3 :
There were no lecture as we had a session with the library with how to cite our references and secondary readings in APA style for our research paper.

PROPOSAL
Week 1
This week, Ms Jinchi introduced us to this module and the importance of research to us designers. She briefed us on the things which we will learn throughout this semester and reminded us to a topic which we are really interested in and best related to our specialization as this would be carried on to our design research dissertation in the following year.
We had to confirm our field of interest (research topic), establish an area we wish to address/solve (research problem) and briefly explain why we chose it.
Here are my slides, showing my initial idea of my research topic and research problem.
First Research Proposal
Feedback :
Ms Jinchi stated that my current research problem was more of a hypothesis instead of a research problem, so it could be changed into a hypothesis in my research proposal. Besides that, my current research topic is more like my research problem instead of the topic. The research topic should be "The importance of graphic design in creating awareness to the general public in the role of life saving".
A few words in my problem statement which could be changed are "convey messages" instead of "communicate","to the public" instead of "around the world" and "images" instead of "pictures". Ms Jinchi told me to use research articles instead of website articles in my problem statement. She also recommended me to create a pilot survey for students in Taylors University to collect data on the
students' awareness about AED so that it could be used to support my statements in my problem statement. Ms Jinchi also said that my topic is focused on graphic design such as advertisements and posters which aims to increase awareness about AED.
After getting feedback from Ms Jinchi, here are the changes I made to my research proposal.

Research Theme: Matches research problem,
Research Topic, Research Problem: Related
Problem Statement: First two paragraphs are connected and there is flow. The third paragraph seems to have no connection with the first two. Is the low survival rate caused by the lack of knowledge in
using AED? Make it clearer. Same with paragraph 4.
Citations: Make sure only surnames and year are featured in-text.
Research Objectives & Research Questions: Think about and read up more about the term “functionality”. What do you aim to study in that regard?
References: Mostly research articles - good.
