PROJECT 1 - SURREALISM

For our project 1, we were tasked to create a surrealist photo. By using one photo with main subject, and additional not more than three layer of photo to achieve the outcome.

I did some research for my ideas and decided to place the Earth onto a drought land and add the skull texture on to the Earth. This gives an environmental message where the skull symbolizes death and the drought shows the current crisis of what's happening on earth, and the Earth is dying due to it's environment.

First I masked the earth onto the drought land background, then masked the picture of the skull on to the Earth.

Although the placement of the Earth seems pretty well blended with the drought land, but the colours of the Earth seemed really odd. So I further improvised on it. Besides that, Mr Martin also commented that the presence of the trees behind sort of disturbs the overall concept of the artwork.

Final attempt :

For my final attempt, I adjusted the colour of the skull and the Earth to blend together first. Then, I matched the colour of the Earth with the background, and added shadow and light on the Earth to make it more well blended with the background and fits the overall concept as well.

As for the trees behind, I copied the picture of the sky as a duplicate layer and masked it on the first layer of the trees so the trees are less visible compared to before.

I didn't cover the entire trees because the placement of light source will be odd and the background will seem too empty.

After we're done with our final artwork, we were tasked to animate the artwork into a 3 second video using Adobe After Effects.

I decided to animate the Earth by using a puppet tool to move the clouds in the Earth.
Beside that, I also moved the mist in front of the trees so it would look like there is a breeze behind to show the emptyness of the drought land.

After completing my animation work in Adobe After Effects, I exported the video.

This is the final animation for my surrealism work.
